Not here, not there, not anywhere!

Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss) half-length portrait, s...

Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss)

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”

“I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living.”

“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.”

“Oh, the things you can find if you don’t stay behind!”

~ Dr. Seuss

One of the greatest writers of children’s books ever, Theodore Geisel Seuss was a man who devoted his life to writing and storytelling. For over 60 years, children of all ages from all over the world have been inspired by his zany, wacky, stupendous, fantabulous stories that have put smiles on the faces of so many people. As a child, I read all his classic books – “Green Eggs and Ham”, “The Cat in the Hat”, “Horton Hear a Who” and “Oh, the Places You’ll Go”. One of my all time favorite stories by Dr. Seuss is “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” which even to this day brings a tear to my eye when I watch it every Christmas season. Seuss was a Pisces like myself which is why I feel such an affinity with him. His work is genius and brilliant in every way and fortunately still lives on through printed pages and video. If you haven’t shared any of Dr. Seuss’s stories with your children or seen them yourself, be sure and do yourself a favor and read all his books and watch all his animated movies. You just might rediscover the child in you that you thought was gone. Now that would be wonderfullicious!

Wanting what you can’t see

“Beauty, truth, friendship, love, creation – these are the great values of life. We can’t prove them, or explain them, yet they are the most stable things in our lives.”

~ Jesse Herman Holmes

Beauty in Nature

Have you ever stopped to realize that the things we desire and chase the most in life are things that we can’t even see. Real beauty is only found within us. Truth is never known. Love, creation and friendship are manifested only when acted out in a physical presense. All of them are abstract and really left to individual interpretation. Regardless of what we think of them, they are truly the most important things in our lives. So, as you live your life seeking material things that you can touch, see, smell and feel, you must realize that they won’t bring any real lasting satisfaction. Remember that sometimes it’s the things you can’t see in life that matter the most.

What it means to be “A Man”

Rudyard Kipling from John Palmer

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936)

‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream – and not make dreams your master,
If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings – nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And – which is more – you’ll be a Man, my son!

You’ve got a friend

JT (album)

James Taylor

“People should watch out for three things: avoid a major addiction, don’t get so deeply into debt that it controls your life, and don’t start a family before you’re ready to settle down. ”

~ James Taylor

Wise words from someone who has seen a lot in his life – stardom, drug addiction, a famous marriage and divorce, lost millions of dollars, etc. JT has always been one of my favorite singer/songwriters. I saw him in concert in 2003 at the Hollywood Bowl and he sounded great as he always does. I suppose because James is a Pisces like myself, I feel an affinity to him. One of my favorite songs he sings is “You’ve Got A Friend” (lyrics below) that has surely brought encouragement to millions of people who needed that song when they were friendless. Try to be better friends to the ones you have and friendlier to those who could be friends.

“You’ve Got A Friend” by Carol King
When you’re down and troubled
and you need a helping hand
and nothing, whoa nothing is going right.
Close your eyes and think of me
and soon I will be there
to brighten up even your darkest nights.

You just call out my name,
and you know whereever I am
I’ll come running, oh yeah baby
to see you again.
Winter, spring, summer, or fall,
all you have to do is call
and I’ll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah.
You’ve got a friend.

If the sky above you
should turn dark and full of clouds
and that old north wind should begin to blow
Keep your head together and call my name out loud
and soon I will be knocking upon your door.
You just call out my name and you know where ever I am
I’ll come running to see you again.
Winter, spring, summer or fall
all you got to do is call
and I’ll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Hey, ain’t it good to know that you’ve got a friend?
People can be so cold.
They’ll hurt you and desert you.
Well they’ll take your soul if you let them.
Oh yeah, but don’t you let them.

You just call out my name and you know wherever I am
I’ll come running to see you again.
Oh babe, don’t you know that,
Winter spring summer or fall,
Hey now, all you’ve got to do is call.
Lord, I’ll be there, yes I will.
You’ve got a friend.
You’ve got a friend.
Ain’t it good to know you’ve got a friend.
Ain’t it good to know you’ve got a friend.
You’ve got a friend.

Love is all you need

“Everything is clearer when you’re in love.”

~ John Lennon

There’s no doubt that being in love makes you feel more certain about yourself as a person. You have more confidence, more ambition, more happiness, even more emotional clarity, all of which make you feel stronger. It’s a beautiful feeling when you’re in love but love can be blind and we can lose sight of the path we intended to travel with the one we fell in love with. When you’re with someone who doesn’t cloud your vision and/or steer you off your desired path, then you know you’re in love with the right person. Just always remember to always make sure you’re in love for all the right reasons so that your path is defined and clear and not clouded with uncertain emotions. Lucidity is key while in love.

Nobility is more honorable than wealth

“Waste your money and you’re only out of money, but waste your time and you’ve lost part of your life.”

~ Michael Leboeuf

Even though money can be hard to acquire and even harder to keep, you can always get more of it if you’re resourceful enough. Getting more time is an impossibility and is one of the very things money cannot buy more of. So, try doing more with your time that will leave a lasting impression with many people instead of doing more with your money that probably will only benefit you. If you give more of your time and money, then you will leave a legacy that is to be desired. Remember to have enough money to last a lifetime.

A million realities from one fantasy

“Each of us holds a library of knowledge from higher existences. When we quiet the mind this knowledge can reveal itself to us.”

~ Unknown

“If one is lucky, a solitary fantasy can transform one million realities.”

~ Maya Angelou

A million fantasies and realities lie within each one of us if we just take the time to stop and listen to what really makes us who we are as humans — our soul. There, you will find a treasure in your chest full of riches you could never buy with money or receive from anyone else. Spend more time looking for the treasure of a million realities that lie within you instead of chasing dreams that will never lead to one reality.

Soul food

“If I had my life to live over again, I would have made a rule to read some poetry and listen to some music at least once a week.”

~ Charles Darwin

During your busy days that are sometimes filled with stress, worry, anger, sadness, and anxiety, you should make time to occasionally read some poems and listen to music that encourages, uplifts and excites you. Neither of these actions require appointments and commitments with other people except yourself, so do yourself a favor and invest in your mental and spiritual health by reading printed words and listen to music that stimulate your soul. If Mr. Darwin needed it in his life, then you probably do too.

Life is poetry in motion

“Nothing will sustain you more potently than the power to recognize in your humdrum routine, as perhaps it may be thought, the true poetry of life.”

~ Sir William Osler (1849-1919) Canadian Physician

Life is what keeps us hoping and hopping from day-to-day and sometimes it’s boring as hell, or unbelievably sad, or emotionally uneventful, or inexplicably exciting and worthwhile. In the end, we measure our live’s by what we have accomplished in the little things to the great things we’ve done. This existence we call life is a wild ride full of surprises both good and bad, so hang on tight and enjoy it the best you can as you constantly look for something to live for.

What are you looking for?

“In every person who comes near you look for what is good and strong; honor that; try to imitate it, and your faults will drop off like dead leaves when their time comes.”

~ John Ruskin (1819-1900) English Art Critic

This is why it’s important to choose good-hearted, smart and sincere people as friends and acquaintances in your life. Their good habits will create good habits in your life and conversely, their bad habits will lead you to ruins. Is there someone in your life that isn’t good for you or sincerely interested in your well-being? If so, choose to improve your life by leaving them and seek someone who enjoys and appreciates you completely. You won’t regret it at all.

Give in to greatness

“It is the nature of man to rise to greatness if greatness is expected of him.”

~ John Steinbeck (1902-1968) American Novelist

What is expected of you? To care for your parents, husband, children, friends, job, business, or even yourself. Whatever things you are to take care of, do them well and to the best of your ability and along the way you will find greatness in some form or manner. Don’t do these things to be great but rather do them in earnest and find greatness from them along the way.

My love is alive!

“The consciousness of loving and being loved brings a warmth and richness to life that nothing else can bring.”

~ Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) Irish Dramatist and Poet

If you always strive to be the best you can be as a friend, lover, mate, spouse or human being and do it with sincerity and fullness of heart, you’ll be loved by many. Love, kindness and warmth are contagious which is why everyone who exhibits these traits will find them in their lives.

I like living. Do you?

“I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing.”

~ Agatha Christie

Sometimes life is unbearable, unfair and miserable but in the end, most of us can say what Agatha poignantly said above. If you can keep your eyes fixed on the things that make you happy and motivate you during the times you feel like giving up, you’ll find that those moments are sweeter and more memorable than if you achieved them without any suffering. Never lose sight of what you want in your life and sooner or later you’ll be very happy you did.

Help yourself by helping others

“If you have not often felt the joy of doing a kind act, you have neglected much, and most of all yourself.”

~ A. Neilen

If you can’t spend some of your time helping others, then what are you living for? If you need reasons for helping others, just think of all the times that people have helped you during your lifetime and where you would be now without their help. Think of someone who needs your help and offer it to them. You’ll feel much better doing it…and so will they!

What is controlling you?

“He who reigns within himself and rules his passions, desires, and fears is more than a king.”

~ John Milton (1608-1674) English Poet

In life, we try to control many aspects of it that we actually cannot control. You should only focus on the things you can control, i.e., your passions, desires and fears. If you can learn to conquer this feat, then you will gain personal power, thusly achieving most anything that is within your ability.

What is stopping you?

“As we strive for success and a better quality of life, it is our duty is to proceed as if limits to our ability do not exist.”

~ James Filbird

The only way you can achieve financial success, good health, a happy family, lasting friendships and personal peace is to live as if there is nothing that can stop you from obtaining them. Learn how to do this from others who are already successful at doing them and also through positive thinking.

Futile friendship?

“To be capable of steady friendship or lasting love, are the two greatest proofs, not only of goodness of heart, but of strength of mind.”

~ William Hazlitt (1778-1830) English Essayist

To prove you are a good friend, you need to show the goodness and character of your true heart. If you don’t or can’t do this, then you are more or less wasting your time with someone if what you seek is a sincere long-term friendship. Nothing lasts forever, so you might as well make the most of your friendships since life is short.

Onward with optimism

“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.”

~ Helen Keller (1880-1968) American Writer

If a woman blinded since childhood can have such optimism that enabled her to achieve such greatness in her life, then how much more optimism can you create in your life. Think of what you can do to make your life better and the lives of those around you will be better too. There is no excuse for not having any optimism in your life…even when there are dark clouds hanging over your head.

Are you all you can be?

“Only as high as I reach can I grow, only as far as I seek can I go, only as deep as I look can I see, only as much as I dream can I be.”

~ Unknown

Life is about learning, searching, watching, listening, reaching, waiting, and dreaming. Along the way, we will stumble and fall but that is not the end at all. Use all your abilities to achieve all you can be in life and you will be happier.

What are you made of?

The real measure of your wealth is how much you’d be worth if you lost all your money.

~Bernard Meltzer

I’ve always believed that you can only really know someone’s true character once their money, clout, popularity and friends are taken from them. It’s easy for people to be many things they really aren’t when they are safely behind their life’s possessions and ego. Until you have lived your life without anything to hide behind, you will never know your true character. Strive to be a good person with or without anything to hide behind.
