You are where you decide you want to be

“People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them.”

~ George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) Irish Playwright

George Bernard Shaw, Irish playwright.

There are always many ways to look at your current situation in life and wonder how it is you arrived there. You can blame your parents, your friends, your surroundings, your lack of good luck, etc. but when it comes right down to it, you really only have yourself to blame. Many people who had nothing in life have accomplished greats things and conversely, those who were born into wealth and excellent conditions have done very little with their lives. So, it all comes down to what you are willing to do no matter the condition and situation you’re in. If you look for ways to improve your situation in life then you will surely get to a better place. If you choose to feel sorry for yourself and not take responsibility for where you are in life, then you will remain in a state of limbo. You need to make something of yourself by choosing to be somebody who can accomplish wonderful things no matter how big or small. Once you decide WHO you want to be in life, not WHAT you want to be, then you’ll surely find circumstances you can be happy with.

  1. I can already anticipate plenty of people itching to comment decrying this. 🙂

  2. Although people come from great poverty, challenges, injustice etc, there is always the possibility of rising above it – and there are great stories through out history to confirm this. That being said, I live in an amazing country with many many things to be grateful for, incredible opportunities, and blessings … but I do believe that we have the choice to decide who we become, and I believe that it is those choices, made day by day, that lead to character … and our destiny.

    • You are absolutely right! Each of us control our own destiny whether we like to admit or not. If people focus on what they have and not what they don’t have, then they can achieve so much more if they look at them as blessings from God.

  3. We are who we think we are. Perspective matters. It does take strength to climb out of holes. Believing in self is an amazing tool to assist with the climb. Thanks for sharing!
